How can packaging help to reduce food waste?

Did you know that almost 15 million tonnes of food is wasted in the UK each year, and nearly half of it comes from our households?

Studies show that people get rid of food because they over cook or were not able to use it in time. Because of this, the average British family wastes almost £470 a year, rising to £700 for families with children.

Preventing all food waste would benefit the environment at the rate of taking one in four cars off the road. It could also improve economic development and help combat hunger in the world.

Reports from Consumer attitudes to food waste and food packaging demonstrate that customers evaluate food products based on their freshness and in-home shelf life. Frequent opening of food products exposes them to air and reduces the time in which they can be safely consumed.

Food products can also get damaged or lost during transportation and storage. Inadequate packaging can result in spillage and degradation of products.

Macfarlane Labels have introduced the Reseal-it® labelling concept that provides the customer with easy to open food packaging. The system allows products to be opened and closed up to 25 times, which keeps them fresher for longer.

Using suitable packaging could reduce some of the food waste and save money for both your customers and your business. Reseal-it® does not require additional packaging such as cling film or fridge bags, which reduces the amount of environmental waste and cuts consumable costs for customers.
